NHS weight management Posted or Updated on 27 Jun 2025

New NHS weight management treatment to be rolled out in West Yorkshire from 23 June

Some people living with Obesity in West Yorkshire could soon benefit from a new treatment as part of a national NHS programme to expand access to weight management support through primary care.

Tirzepatide, commonly known as Mounjaro, is a weekly injection shown to help weight loss and improve related health conditions.  From 23 June 2025 a small number of GP practices in West Yorkshire started to contact people who might be medically eligible for this treatment to invite them for a clinical assessment.

This phased rollout follows updated guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and is part of a national staged programme aimed at improving health outcomes for people living with Obesity and related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board said:

“Obesity is a serious and growing health challenge in West Yorkshire, and we’re committed to making sure those who need support can access safe and effective treatments, Introducing Mounjaro through a small number of local GP practices initially is an important step forward. It’s just one part of a wider package of support that includes diet, lifestyle and behavioural coaching.”

Mounjaro is not available to everyone right away. The NHS in West Yorkshire is using a phased approach to ensure the service is introduced safely and fairly. In the first year, access will be offered to people with a body mass index (BMI) of 40* or more, alongside at least four significant weight-related health conditions.

Patients who are eligible will also need to take part in wraparound care, a structured support programme focused on healthy eating, physical activity, and sustained behaviour change.

The spokesperson explained how patients would be contacted about Mounjaro if they were eligible:

“Mounjaro is currently only available to a small number of patients who meet strict clinical criteria following a clinical assessment.  So, there’s no need to contact your GP practice - if you are eligible, your practice or the NHS will contact you directly.

Reception staff are not able to offer assessments over the phone so please wait to be contacted if this treatment is appropriate for you.”

This phased rollout of Mounjaro complements existing NHS services such as the NHS Digital Weight Management Programme, the NHS Diabetes Path to Remission Programme, and locally commissioned weight loss support services.
